Good Education to the Teachers Is a Solution for the Korean Education System

Korea has been struggling with a rising suicide rate. It has the highest suicide rate among the 33 member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECE), with nearly 30 out of every 100,100 people killing themselves in 2009.
Korean high school students are under a great deal of stress to gain admission to a prestigious university and sacrifice childhood pleasures. This phenomenon can be clear when we understand that Korean society is dominated by the people from top ranking universities, and the rest will be excluded from the benefits associated with social status. This societal structure promotes many forms of discrimination.

To make matters worse, the teacher who actually treats all students in the public school has problems. They seem indifferent to the students’ understanding but mumble to himself during the class. Furthermore they don’t try to be close with their students.
The bottom of teachers’ problem would back to the training which they received. They couldn’t learn how to communicate with the students and how to treat them because what they had needed was not the knowledge of these things but only the good grade from the fierce teacher certification examination (TCE).

To change the societal structure is too difficult but to change the means of TCE is not too difficult. Besides if we know that teacher affect the students greatly, is it the one of great solution for the Korean education system to change the means of TCE?
The university education for the teachers should be enhanced whereas the TCE should be reduced in selecting new teacher. Then, for the first time, pre-teacher will effort to learn what they should know.

  4. Perhaps you are right that it may be too hard to change social hierarchy as a whole, but perhaps the education system should take a more egalitarian approach. This means that an individuals worth should not be reliant on political, economic, and social status and that everyone should be considered equal and their individual skills and contributions to society should be equally appreciated.

I am not too familiar with the teacher certification testing process in Korea, but I do one day hope to work in English Teacher education here in Korea. I would recommend that teacher's should complete internships at universities so they can gain experience teaching in actual classes in addition to studying the theory behind education, English grammar, etc.
